The Phoenix Project

While at the RSA Conference this week, the nice people at Tripwire gave me a copy of their CTO’s book The Phoenix Project: A Novel About IT, DevOps, and Helping Your Business Win.

The theme of the book is that Bill is an IT manager at Parts Unlimited.  The company's new IT initiative, code named Phoenix Project, is critical to the future of Parts Unlimited, but the project is massively over budget and very late. The CEO wants Bill to report directly to him and fix the mess in ninety days or else Bill's entire department will be outsourced.

In the book Gene Kim, former CTO of Tripwire, and co-authors Kevin Behr and George Spafford take a narrative approach to the struggles everyone in IT faces daily.

The books looks to be an entertaining read that is cross between Steven Covey and Dilbert, integrating strategy and comedy, to show the reader how to rise above the inanities of the IT world, and finish project on time, with limited requirements.

Kim has long championed devops, which is detailed throughout the book.

The Phoenix Project: A Novel About IT, DevOps, and Helping Your Business Win should be an interesting and entertaining read.  Perfect for the long flight home from an exhausting conference.
